Two key hirings were made last week by the Parlier Unified School District, less than a week before the start of the 2009-2010 school year.
One of those hirings is Doug South, the new Parlier High School Athletic Director. South replaces Marcelo Gonzalez, who retired at the end of the last school year.
At the Aug. 11 meeting of the Parlier Unified School District Board of Education, officials announced the hiring of Kevin O’Dell as the new music teacher at Parlier High School and Parlier Junior High School.
A new math teacher position was filled by David Aved. Three new substitute teachers were also hired.
South comes with experience. “I have coached football since I was 23 years old,” said the 50-year-old South. His last coaching position at Rosamond High School (where he coached from 2008-2009) was reportedly eliminated by budget cuts. From 2000-2008, he served as athletic director, dean of students and head football coach at Lucerne Valley Middle School and High School in Lucerne Valley,
While completing the University of Idaho Master’s Program, he taught at the Boise Area High School and served as athletics and facilities director.
Before getting the Parlier job, South said that he applied for several of the football coaching openings in the area, including at Selma. The Selma job went to former Ridgeview, Dinuba and Exeter Coach Mike Crews, who replaced Justin Fowler, who went on to Mount Whitney High School in Visalia.
“Now I’m just sorting stuff out and seeing what’s what,” said South. One of the first things he will need to work on is getting schedules finalized for all of the fall sports teams. The only schedule that he had last Friday was the volleyball schedule.
