Led by Morghan Williams, the Kings Christian Crusaders spoiled the East Sierra League home opener for the Orange Cove High School Lady Titans volleyball team on Oct. 8.
It took just 58 minutes for Kings Christian to record a 25-14, 25-16, 25-17 win over the Titans in the Titans’ gym. Williams led the Crusaders with eight kills and one block.
Three days earlier, the Titans opened ESL action with a victory in four games on the road over Farmersville. The scores of the close match were 25-22, 25-21, 24-26 and 26-24.
The Titans faced Woodlake in a non-league match at home on Monday, Oct. 12. Results of that match will be published next week. This Thursday, Orange Cove travels to Laton for another ESL contest before a key Tuesday, Oct. 20 contest at McFarland High School.
In the Oct. 8 contest with Kings Christian, the Crusaders jumped out to a quick 6-0 first game lead, forcing Titan Coach Michelle Gutierrez to use an early timeout. The Lady Titans were able to pull back within two points at 7-5 before Kings Christian regained control with eight of the next nine points.
A kill by Teresa Medel and a service ace by Kristina Zamora helped Orange Cove build an early 5-2 lead in the second game. But Kings Christian took advantage of several Lady Titan mistakes to score six straight points to take control.
A service ace by Medel tied the game at 8-all before Kings Christian ran off eight straight points.
In the third game, Medel made two plays at the net to help the Titans build an early 4-1 lead. But Kings Christian rallied again, taking the lead for good at 11-10 on a Titan hitting error.
“It was a mental thing today,” said Coach Gutierrez after the match. “I think they eventually shut down a little bit. I think they were intimidated because they haven’t seen someone quite as tall and someone with as much ability as Williams. Their coach did a great job. They have a great team this year, compared to other years. They really stepped it up.”
The Orange Cove coach said that this match was a wakeup call of what they will see in the remainder of the league season. “Next time around, we are definitely going to be ready for them. We know what to expect now.” The two teams are scheduled to meet each other again on Monday, Oct. 26.
When asked if McFarland should be considered the league favorite, Gutierrez said that the Cougars are just another team. “We will take them one at a time."
. Every day is different.”
She added that the win over Farmersville was a team effort. “Everybody was together and it was a great communicating day. Everybody executed very well in that match.”
