A husband and wife from Reedley were killed in a July 1 crash at a rural intersection east of Selma.
Jose Vasquez Becerra, 65, and Leticia Vasquez 63, were traveling east on Rose Avenue just after 2:30 p.m. when their Nissan Ultima was struck broadside by a southbound Honda Civic carrying a family of four, according to the California Highway Patrol. The Ultima overturned several times and came to rest in the yard of a house south of the intersection.
The couple died at the scene, the CHP reported.
The Civic apparently ran the stop sign at Bethel. The intersection has a two-way stop, with Bethel Avenue traffic directed to stop. Rose Avenue has no stop sign. The intersection has been the scene of fatal crashes in the past.
The occupants of the Civic – two adults and a 9-year-old boy and 4-year-old girl – were transported to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, the CHP reported. The two children reportedly suffered major injuries.
Conditions of the family members in the Civic were unavailable on July 2.
Cause of the crash still was under investigation as of July 2, according to the CHP.
