Reedley-Roosevelt boysFC

Reedley High School senior Guadalupe Sanchez (left) controlled the dribble against Roosevelt High defender Eduardo Nunez during the first half of the Pirates' 1-0 victory over the Rough Riders on Jan. 11.

The Reedley High boys carried over the momentum of four competitive games at a Santa Maria tournament to claim victories in their first two North Yosemite League soccer matches last week.

The Pirates (11-6-2, 2-0) erupted for three first-half goals on their way to a 5-3 triumph over visiting Fresno High on Jan. 9, then made a first-half goal stand up in a 1-0 shutout at Roosevelt Jan. 11 in a battle of 1-0 teams. Reedley will be home to take on Sunnyside — which won and tied its first two league matches – at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18 at Sal Gonzalez Field.

Reedley controlled the tempo of the match most of the way against Roosevelt, keeping early offensive pressure on that resulted in a score in the 15th minute by junior Tomas Alvarez.
