Reedley High School's cross country teams will try to qualify for state competition when they participate in the Central Section Meet on Thursday, Nov. 15, at Woodward Park in Fresno. First races begin at 11:30 a.m. at the three-mile course where the CIF State Championships will be run on Saturday, Nov. 24.
The Pirates turned in a strong performance at the North Yosemite League meet on Nov. 9, also at Woodward Park. The varsity girls won the team title with 45 points, four better than runner-up Sunnyside High of Fresno. The boys came up short in their bid to successfully defend their league title, but scored 50 points to finish second behind champion Roosevelt High of Fresno.
The Reedley girls had all five of its scoring runners place in the top 15, overcoming a Sunnyside squad led by individual winner Jessica Valles. Junior Ximena Ramos led RHS with a fourth place finish clocking 21 minutes, .7 seconds. Junior Natalie Reyes placed sixth at 21:38.6 followed by junior Jasmine Garcia (eighth in 21:44.2), freshman Paola Rangel (14th in 23:01.6) and junior Keila Robles (15th in 23:05.6). Junior Gloria Becerra (16th in 23:09.2) and junior Marissa Zuniga (19th in 23:30) both placed in the top 20 of 35 competing runners.
Sunnyside's Valles posted a winning time of 19:07.8, followed by Hoover's Yorkabel Gebrehiwot (20:09.8) and Sunnyside's Maria Guerra (20:31.3).
Junior Matthew Jarrett turned in a top three individual finish for Reedley in the varsity boys race, clocking 17 minutes, 03.7 seconds to trail Hoover's Adam Yang (16:30.4) and Sunnyside's Aaron Rubio (16:34.0).
